Entered Grenadier Guards, as Lieutenant, Aug. 23, 1884; promoted to Captain, Nov. 4, 1896; Major, May 2, 1900; was on special service in China, Nov. 20, 1900, to Feb. 27, 1902; temporary Military Attache", Seoul, Jan. 19, 1904, to March 16, 1905; attached to Japanese Army in Manchuria, March 17, 1905, until close of war; Military Attache, Peking, 1905; was slightly wounded in the Boxer Campaign, near Tientsin, 1900 (mentioned in despatches, and D.S.O.); took part in operations in Transvaal and Cape Colony in May, 1902.
