SOOTHILL, Rev. William Edward (WENCHOW), Missionary; b. Jan., 1861; m. Dec., 1884, Lucy Farrar, rf. of Charles Farrar, of South-ouram. Educ.: Privately; passed legal preliminary, and. matriculated at London University, but did not go on to degree. Arrived in China, 1882; was present during Wenchew riot, 1884; head of Meth. Mission, Wencbow, which consists of 8,000 members and adherents; instituted and built Coll. for Chinese young men, which has now nearly 200 pupils, also many elementary schools, the largest of which has over 800 pupils; built Dingley Hosp., and in 1906 built large Blyth Hosp., which contains 150 beds; was visiting Peking in 1898 at the time of the Empress-Dowager's coup d'etat.
