Came out to Foochow in 1880, as Prof. of Mathematics and Navigation in the Schools at Foochow Arsenal; left in 1891, and joined I.M.C. as Asst.-Acting Chinese Sec. to Inspector General of Customs, 1898-1900; acting Commissioner of Customs at Swatow, 1900-01; District Postmaster, Shanghai, 1903-5; in Peking during siege of Legations, 1900 (mentioned in Brit. Minister's despatches for good services). Decorations: China War Medal, 1900, clasp "Defence of Legations"; Double Dragon, 3rd class.
