VAUGHANSMITH, Alice Mildred (TIENTSIN), Journalist; b. 1861. Educ.: Privately. Commenced literary career in 1889, as leader writer,"Japan Gazette," and correspondent, "N.C. Daily News," (Shanghai) and "Japan Mail"; became Editor of "Japan Gazette," 1891, and remained so nearly three years; visited India in 1893-4, corresponding meanwhile for " N.C Daily News,""Chicago Daily News," etc.; came to China, 1894, acted as war correspondent for "Civil and Military Gazette," Lahore, through China-Japan War, and as political leader writer for "N.C. Daily News "during Editor's absence; edited "Shanghai Times," 1896; went to Tientsin, 1897, and was appointed Editor,"Peking and Tientsin Times," then a weekly; appointed sole representative in N. China of London "Standard," 1898, and remained so until that paper was sold in 1904; was present in Tientsin throughout the siege of 19CO, acting for "Standard," " N.C. Daily News," Hongkong "Telegraph"; 1901, acted also as Reuter's agent for six months; became sole Editor of "Peking and Tientsin Times," daily, in 1903, and still holds this position.
