This page provides a framework for displaying the language abilities of users on their user page. This helps with communication by listing which languages, and how much of each, users can understand.

Babel user information
Users by language

Not everyone here speaks/writes the same language. To help with communication, please categorize yourselves by language categories on your user page. Example language groups: en for English, de for German, and so on. Additionally, users can specify their level of proficiency in the language:

  • 0 stands for no knowledge. It should only be used when knowledge might be expected.
  • 1 stands for basic knowledge: the ability to understand and answer simple questions in the language.
  • 2 stands for intermediate knowledge.
  • 3 stands for advanced or fluent knowledge: the ability to correct spelling and grammar errors in the language.
  • 4 (where it exists) stands for near-native/very fluent ability.

So de-1 identifies a user with basic skills in German, and en-3 identifies a user with advanced skills in English. The two-letter language codes are the same codes described in ISO 639. (See the complete list of language Wikipedias available).

How to add your language level to your user page edit

  • Start off with {{#Babel:
  • Next add one of the following codes for each language you speak, separated by |, where xx is the Wikipedia code for the language:
    • xx-1 for basic command (the ability to understand and answer simple questions in the language)
    • xx-2 for an intermediate level of knowledge
    • xx-3 for advanced or fluent understanding (the ability to correct spelling and grammar errors in the language)
    • xx if you're a native speaker or have a grasp of the language comparable to a native speaker (Templates for native speakers are not available for all languages. If this template misses for your language, please create it or use xx-3.).
  • Then finish by adding closing brackets: }}

So, for example, {{#Babel:en|de-1}} would indicate a native speaker of English with basic knowledge of German. {{#Babel:sv|en-3|fr-2|es-1}} would indicate a native speaker of Swedish with an advanced knowledge of English, an intermediate knowledge of French, and a basic knowledge of Spanish.

Categories and templates edit

Here a sample list of categories and templates needed. The order of creation is important:

  1. Create the main category, (noted 1)
  2. Create the secondary categories (noted 2-4)
  3. Create the templates (noted 5-7)

If your language has templates already on Commons, you can copy them here. (See Commons:Commons:Babel).
