hath made them the Standards of that Style is the Clearness, the Life and Vigor of their Expression, everywhere properly varied, according to the Variety of the Subjects they wrote on: For History and Narration are nothing but just and lively Descriptions of the remarkable Events and Accidents in the World.
For this Reason we praise Herodotus and Thucydides among the Greeks, for I will mention no more of them, and upon this Account we commend Salust and Livy among the Romans. For tho' they all differ in their Style, yet they all agree in these common Excellencies.
