Painted for S. Marco, Florence ; given in 1588 to Bishop Milanesi ; trans- ferred in 1690 to apartments of Prince Fer- dinand, son of Grand Duke Cosmo III., thence to the Palazzo Pitti. Vasari, ed. Giovanni e Paolo ; burned with Titian's Peter Martyr, Aug. 16, 1867. Vasari calls it one of the best crea- tions up to its time in Venice. It was Bel- lini's masterpiece. Vasari, ed.
