Cravens, William Ben, lawyer, congressman, was born Jan. 17, 1872, in Fort Smith, Ark. He graduated from the law school of the university of Missouri. For four years he was city attorney of Fort Smith, Ark.; and for six years was prosecuting attorney of the twelfth judicial district of Arkansas. In 1907-11 he was a representative from Arkansas to the sixtieth and sixty-first congresses a a democrat. Craver, Harrison W., metallurgist, librarian, was born Aug. 10, 1875, in Owaneco, 111. Since 1903 he has been technology librarian to the Carnegie library of Pittsburg, Pa. Crawford, Mrs Alice, author, poet, was born in 1850 in Wisconsin. She was the author of A Few Thoughts for a Few Friends, a collection of poems. She died in 1874 in

Milwaukee, Wis. Crawford, Andrew J., railroad president, was born Nov. 7, 1837, in Montgomery county. Pa. Since 1891 he has been president of the Nashville and Knoxville railroad. Crawford, Coe Isaac, lawyer, governor. United States senator, was born Jan. 14, 1858, in Volney, Iowa. Crawford, Dugal, merchant, was born Feb. 1830, in Scotland. He came to St. Louis, Mo., commenced the dry goods business, which is now one of the largest concerns in the country. He is the first and only president since the starting of the Congregational city missionary society of St. Louis in 1887; and for nearly a quarter of a century has been president of St. Louis Caledonian so2,

Crawford, George Washington, lawyer, congressman, governor, cabinet officer, was born Dec. 23, 1798, in Columbia county, Ga. In 1827-31 he was attorney-general. He was in the state legislature in 1837-42; and in 1841-43 he was a representative from Georgia to the twenty-seventh congress to fill a vacancy. He was the twentieth governor of Georgia in 1843-47. In

1849-50 he was secretary of war. He died July 22, 1872, in Richmond county, Ga.; and was deeply mourned. Crawford, Joel, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was born June 15, 1783, in Columbia

county, Ga. In 1813 he joined the army of General Floyd; and served throughout the whole campaign as aide-de-camp to the general. He served three years in the state legislature. In 1817-21 he was a representative from Georgia to the fifteenth and sixteenth congresses. He died April 5, 1858, in Georgia. Crawford, Francis Marion, author, was born Aug. 2, 1854, in Italy. Crawford, John, merchant, founder, was born July 26, 1816, in Ireland. He founded the mercantile establishment of H. and S.

company of Cincinnati, Ohio. He served on a committee appointed to consti-uct a pontoon bridge between Cincinnati and Covington at the beginning of the civil war; and was a, member of other organizations known as war committees. He died Dec. 1877, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Crawford, John G., lawyer, orator, legislator, author, was born April 21, 1834, in Oakham, Mass. Hampshire most of the time since 1870. He knew John Brown personally, and escaped lynching more than once during the bleeding Kansas troubles in 1855-56, in which he was a prominent factor. He is the author of The Indians of the Merrimack; The Nomenclature of the Abinaka Indians; and several historic sketches.

Crawford, John Martin, physician, diplomat, author, was bom Oct. 18, 1845, in Herrick, Pa. In 1888 he was president of the Western academy of medicine; and in 188994 was United States consul general to Russia. He is the author of The Industries of Russia, In five volumes.
