In 1870 he graduated with the degree of A.B. from Scio college of Ohio; in 1876 graduated with the degree of B.D. from the Drew theological seminary; and subsequently he received the degree of D.D. from the Claflin university. Ever since 1876 he has been a clergyman in the methodist episcopal church; and until 1886 niled various pastorates. Davidson, William, planter, state senator, congressman, was bom on Sept. 2, 1778, in Mecklenburg county, N.C. He represented his native county in the state legislature as senator in 1813-17. In 1817-21 he was a representative from North Carolina to the fifteenth and sixteenth congresses and served again in the state senate in 1827. He died Sept. 16, 1857, in Mecklenburg county, N.C.

In 1895 he was elected mayor of Oakland; and during his term great improvements were made. He was the founder of the Merchant's exchange of Oakland; and in 1904 organized and became president of the California co-operative meat company; and is now operating mines in Mexico. Davie, William Richardson, soldier, legislator, governor, was born June 20, 1756, near White Haven, England. He settled at Halifax, N.C; and he was for many years a member of the state legislature.
