In 1877-81 he was a representative from California to the forty-fifth and forty sixth congresses as a republican. He is the president of the Sperry flour company of San Francisco, which has a capital of ten million dollars. He is the author of Dolor Davis, a Sketch of His Life; American Constitutions and the Relation of the Three Departments as Adjusted by a Century; and Shakespeare's Sonnets, an Essay. Davis, James, clergyman, bishop, was born in 1862 in Ireland. In 1878 he was ordained priest; and had charge of churches at Windham and Holbrook, Iowa. In 1906 he was consecrated bishop of Davenport, Iowa. Davis, Jefferson, lawyer, United States senator, governor, was born June 37, 1862, in Little River county. Ark. He was educated at Russellville, Ark.; and in 1884 graduated from the law department of Vanderbilt university. In 1884 he began the practice of law; in ]892 became prosecuting attorney for the fifth judicial district of Arkansas; and in 1898 was elected attorney-general of Arkansas. In 1900 he became governor of the state of Arkansas. He is now United States senator from Arkansas for the term of 1907-13. born near Morris, 111. She made her opera debut in New York City in Faust. She joined the Carleton opera company and subsequently the American opera company and toured the leading American cities. She was the wife of Will J. Davis of Chicago, 111. She died in 1905. Davis, John, clergyman, founder, was bom Sept. 10, 1721, in Pennepek, Pa. He was ordained a baptist minister in 1756, went to Maryland the same year, and established flourishing churches in Baltimore, Frederick City, and elsewhere. He died in 1809 in Harford county, Md.
