Davis, John Chandler Bancroft, diplomat, author, was born Dec. 29, 1822, in Worcester, Mass. He was agent for the United States before the Geneva court of arbitration on the Alabama claims; and in 1873-77 was minister to Germany. In 1869-71 and 1873-74 he was assistant secretary of state at Washington, D.C. He is the author of The Massachusetts Justice; The Case of the United States Before the Tribunal of Arbitration at Geneva; Treaties of the United States, with Notes; United States Supreme Court Reports; and Mr. Fish and the Alabama Claims. Davis, John D., educator, author, was bom March 5, 1854, in Pittsburg, Pa. He is professor of oriental and old testament literature in Princeton theological seminary. He is the author of Genesis and Semitic Tradition; and A Dictionary of the Bible. Davis, John Ward, lawyer, banker, was born March 30, 1851, in St. Louis, Mo. to 1874-1903 he practiced law. He is vicepresident of the Mississippi Valley Trust company. For many years he was president of the Princeton club of St. Louis; and since 1901 has been a trustee of Princeton university. In 1898-99 he was president of the university club of St. Louis, Mo. Davis, John 6., congressman, was bom Oct. 10, 1810, in Fleming county, Ky. In 1851-55 and 1857-61 he was a representative from Indiana to the thirty-second, thirtythird, thirty-fifth and thirty-sixth congresses. He died Jan. 18, 1866, in Terre Haute, Ind.
