ade running steamer Georgina. He became rear-admiral; and had command of the Asiatic station. He died March 13, 1889, in Washington, B.C. Davis, John Merrill, soldier, educator, clergyman, college president, was bom Nov. 16, 1846 , in Harrisonville, Ohio. He received the rudiments of his education in the public schools of his native state; in 1873 gradiiated from the Ohio university at Athens, and has received the degrees of Ph.D. and D.D. During the civil war he served seven months as a private in the one hundred and eightyeighth regiment, Ohio volunteer infantry. In 1873-74 he taught in the Ohio university; and in 1874-78 taught in the Ridgeville college of Indiana. Since 1879 he has filled a professorship in the Rio Grande college of Ohio; and since 1877 has been president.
John Patterson, lawyer, author, was bom May 37, 1863, in Niles, Mich. In 1894-93 he was assistant in history and economics at the university of Michigan; and since then has been in law practice in Idaho. He was the author of The Union Pacific Railway, a Study of Political and Economic History. He died in 1903 in Najnpa Idaho. Davis, John W., physician, congressman, governor, was born July 17, 1799, in Lancaster, Pa. He served as a surrogate; then in the legislature of Indiana; and was speaker of the lower branch in 1833 and 1841. He was also a commissioner to make a treaty with the Indians. In 1835-37 and 1839-45 he was a representative from Indiana to the twenty-fourth, twenty-sixth, and twenty-eighth congresses. In 1845-47 he was speaker of the house to the twenty-ninth congress. In 1848 he was appointed minister to China. He was governor of Oregon territory in 1853-54. He died Aug. 33, 1859, in Davis,

Davis, John William, educator, civil engineer, state senator, governor, was bom on March 7, 1836, in Rehoboth, Mass. In 184450 he was engaged in mason and civil engineering work, teaching school in winters; and in 1850-90 was in the grain trade at Providence, R.I. He was state senator in 1885, 1886 and 1893; and was the thirtyseventh governor of Rhode Island in 189091. In 1897 he was mayor of Pawtucket, R.I. He died in 1907 in Pawtucket, R.I. Davis, John Woodbridge, civil engineer, author, was bom Aug. 19, 1854, in New York City. He was the author of Formulae for the Calculation of Railroad Earth Work and Average Haul, which speedily came into use as a textbook, and Dynamics of the Sun. He died in 1903 in New York City. Davis, Joseph John, lawyer, congressman, was born April 13, 1838, in Franklin county.

Davis, Joseph Phineas, designer, civil engineer, was bom April 15, 1837, in Northboro, Mass. In 1873 he was made city engineer of Boston, Mass. He dejjgned and executed a system of main drainage for Boston. In 1880 he was president of the Boston society of civil engineers.
Davis, Joseph Slocum, lawyer, jurist, was born Nov. 31, 1813, in Pickaway coimty, Ohio. He was twice elected Judge; and held other offices, both national and local. He died Dec. 31, 1884, in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
