Davis, Thomas T., lawyer, congressman. In 1797-1803 he was a representative to the fifth, sixth and seventh congresses. He was appointed in 1803 United States judge for the territory of Indiana. In 1863-67 he was a representative from New York to the thirty- eighth and thirtyninth congresses. He died May 2, 1872, in New York. works. Davis, Varina Anne Jefferson, author, was born in 1864 in Richmond, Va. She was the daughter of Jefferson Davis, and known as the Daughter of the Confederacy. She was the author of An Irish Knight of the Nineteenth Century, a Sketch of Robert Emmet; and The Veiled Doctor. She died Sept. 19, 1898, at Narragansett Pier, R.I. Davis, Mrs. Varina Howell Jefierson, author, was born May 7, 1826, in Natchez, Miss. In 1845 she was married to Jefferson Davis, who became president of the confederacy. She was the author of Jefferson Davis, a Memoir by His Wife. She died Oct. 16, 1906, in

Davis, Vernon Mansfield, lawyer, jurist, was born Jan. 29, 1855, in New York City. He began the practice of law in 1879 ; and in 1896-97 was district attorney. In 1902 he was elected justice of the supreme court of New York for the term ending in 1916.

In 1897-1900 he was assistant secretary of the interior. He is the author of John Bull's Crime, or the Assault on Republics. Davis, Werter Renick, clergyman, educator, college president, was born April 1, 1818, in Circleville, Ohio. He was president of Baker university; and for fourteen consecutive years was appointed to a presiding eldership. During the civil war he went to the front as chaplain of the twelfth Kansas

infantry. He was a member of the first state legislature of Kansas. He died about 1900 in Baldwin, Kan. Davis, William Bramwell, physician, author, was born July 22, 1832, in Ohio.
