He died Feb. 1886, in South Carolina. Desbrosses, Elias, merchant, founder, was born in 1718 in New York City. He was one of the founders of the chamber of commerce in 1768, and its president in 1771-73. Desbrosses street of New York City is named in his honor. He died in March, 1778. Desha, Joseph, soldier, congressman, governor, was bom Dec. 9, 1768, in Pennsylvania. He served for a time in the state legislature; he fought at the battle of the Thames as a major-general. In 1807-19 he was a representative from Kentucky to the tenth to the fiftheenth congresses. He was the eighth governor of Kentucky in 1834-38, He died Oct. 13, 1843, in Georgetown, Ky. He is a Roman catholic priest of the redemptorist order; was engaged in mission work and later pastor of St. Pauls church of New York City. He is the author of Guide for Young Catholic Women which has had a very extended circulation. He died Dec.

After taking her vows in 1845, stationed at Cincinnati until 1853, when she was sent to Lowell to found a convent and school for catholic girls. She died in 1879 in Lowell, Mass. Des Jardins, Benjamin M., inventor, was born Oct. 16, 1858, in Tyre, Mich. In 1883 he constructed the first type-setting machine; and made the first computing instrument to justify the lines. He was for two years employed on the Chicago Inter-Ocean. In 1899 he invented the typewriter adding

machine. De Smet, Peter John, missionary, author, was bom Dec. 31, 1801, in Belgium. He was a noted Roman catholic missionary to the Indians. He was the author of The Oregon Missions and Travels over the Rocky Mountains; Indian Letters and Sketches; Western Missions and Missionaries; and New Indian Sketches. He died in May, 1872, in

Congress in 1807 gave a tract of land on Detroit river, in return for his loyalty to the United States. He subsequently became United States marshal for the territory of Michigan; and in 1839 state treasurer. He died March 6, 1880, in Detroit, Mich. De Sola, Abraham, clergyman, author, was bora Sept. 18, 1835, in London. In 1853 he was appointed professor of Hebrew and oriental literature at McGill university.
