He served as a soldier in the union army during the civil war; and became first lieutenant in the seventh Kansas cavalry. He has served as country treaurer of Boone country, Iowa; was editor of the Boone Republican in 1873-83; and was postmaster and mayor of that city. He was special examiner of the United States pension board for eight years. He is now secretary of the board of trustees of the public library of Phoenix, Arizona; and has now retired from active work, but devotes his leisure to literary pursuits. He is the

author of The Trumpeters and Other Poems. Downing, Andrew Jackson, landscape gardener, horticulturist, author, was born Oct. He did much 20, 1815, in Newburg, N.Y. to popularize a knowledge of rural art. He was the author of Theory and Practice ot Landscape Gardening; Fruit and Fruit Trees of America Architecture of Country Houses Cottage Residences; and Rural Essays. Downing, Edward Collins, educator, authwas born Feb. 24, 1862, in Wooster, Ohio. In 1885 he graduated from the university of Wooster; and subsequently received the degree of Doctor of philosophy from that institution. He has held professorships in Carthage collegiate institute of or, poet,

Missouri; in Toulin academy of Illinois; at Macalester college of St. Paul, Minn.; and has filled the chair of latin language and literature in that institution for nearly twenty years. He has contributed both prose and verse to American literature; and is the author of a volume of poems entitled Minutes With the Muses. Downing, Mrs. Fanny Murdaugh, author, poet, was born Oct. 19, 1831, in Portsmouth, Va. She was the author of Nameless; Per-

Dixie. She died May 7, 1894, in Portsmouth. Downing, Finis Ewing, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Aug. 24, 1846. in Virginia, 111. Since 1891 he has published the Virginia Enquirer. He was elected secretary of the senate in 1893 for the thirtyeighth general assembly of Illinois; and was elected to the fifty-fourth congress as a democrat.

Downing, Jerome F., journalist, educator, lawyer, insurance manager, was born about 1830 in Enfield, Mass. Early in life he was a journalist; and became chief editor of the Troy daily Post of New York. Later he engaged in educational work; and became principal of the high school of Carlisle, Pa. In the meantime he studied law; and in 1855 began the practice of his profession in Erie, Pa., where he was chosen district attorney for the county. In 1864 the insurance company of North America, founded in 1799 offered him the management of its western department, which position he still holds. In 1875-95 the Pennsylvania fire was also under his management. In 1895 he became also manager of the fire association of Philadelphia in conjunction with the

North America, the combination being known, as the Philadelphia underwriters. In a service of forty years as insurance manager he is recognized as in the front rank of fire underwriters in the world.. I'He was one of the charter members of the Union; and served for two terms as its first president.

Downs, Ashbel, Fairchild, lawyer, author, was born Sept. 7, 1854, in New Geneva, Pa. He is a noted lawyer of Uniontown, Pa. He is the author of Heroes and Heroic Deeds, or Uncrowned Kings; and various addresses and other papers. Downs, Mrs. George Sheldon, litterateur, author, was born June 5, 1843, in Wrentham, Mass. She is the author of Brownie's Triumph; A True Aristocrat; also Katherine's Sheaves; Step by Step; and other works. Downs, Solomon W., lawyer. United States senator, was born in 1801 in Tennessee. He was United States district attorney from 1845-47; a presidential elector in 1844; collector of the port of Orleans;
