In that year was form ed what is now the Prudential insurance company of America. Into it were merged all the rights, titles, interests and obligations of the Friendly society, and Mr. Dry-

den accepted the nominally modest but all important office of secretary. From the' first he has been chief guide and motive power of the institution. He was one of the founders of the Fidelity trust company. In 1896 and 1900 he was a presidential elector. In 1902-07 he was a member of the United States senate. Dryer, Charles Redway Wilmarth, educator, scientist, author, was bom on Aug. 31, 1850, in Victor, N.Y. In 1886-93 he was assistant to the Indiana geological survey; and since 1893 has been professor of geography and geology in the Indiana state normal school at Terre Haute, Ind. He is the author of Studies in Indiana Geography; and Lessons in Physical Geography. Drysdale, Alex J., soldier, clergyman, was born Nov. 21, 1837, in Savannah. In 1861 he served in the civil war. In 1876 was ordained deacon. He filled pastorates in Cartersville, Dalton and Atlanta, Ga.; and in 1883 went to New Orleans to accept a call to Christ church. He died Aug. 30, 1886, in

Waukesha, Wis. Drysdale, Hugh, colonial governor. In 172226 he was colonial governor of Virginia. Drysdale, Thomas Murray, physician, founder, author, was born Aug. 31, 1831, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1862 he delivered a course of lectures on the microscope in the Franklin institute. He was a delegate to the international medical congress in 1876; and was one of the founders of the American gynecological society. He died Nov. 36, 1904, in Philadelphia, Pa. Drysdale, William, journalist, author, was born July 11, 1852, in Lancaster, Pa. For twenty years he was on the staff of the New York Times. He was the author of Proverbs from Plymouth Pulpit; In Sunny Lands; Outdoor Life in Nassau and Cuba; The Princess of Montserat; The Mystery of Abel Forefinger; The Young Reporter; The Fast Mail; The Beach Patrol; The Young Supercargo; and Cadet Standish of the St. Louis. He died Sept. 20, 1901, in Cranford, N.J. Duane, Alexander, physician, author, was born Sept. 1, 1858, in Malone, N.Y. Since 1881 he has practiced his profession in New

York City. During the Spanish-American war he served as lieutenant in the United btates navy, in charge of the second district coast signal service. He is the author of Student's Medical Dictionary; Rules for Signaling on Land and Sea; and is editor and translator of Fuchs' Textbook of Ophthal-

mology. Duane, Edmund F., lawyer, jurist. He was judge of one of the United States territorial courts sometime prior to 1884. Duane, James, jurist, statesman, was born Feb. 6, 1733, in New York City. In 1774-84 he was a delegate from New York to the continental congress, and signed the articles of confederation. He attended the Indian treaty at Albany in 1775; was a member of the constitutional convention in 1776-77; and was on the committee which drafted it. He was a member of the committee of safety. He was state senator in 1783-84; was first mayor of New York City in 1784; member of the convention to adopt the federal constitution in 1788; and United States district judge in 1789-94. He died Feb. 1, 1797, in Duanesburg, N.Y. Duane, James Chatham, soldier, author, was born June 30, 1824, in Schenectady, N. Y. He was a brigadier-general of the United States army. He was the author of Manual for Engineer Troops. He died Nov. 7, 1897,

Duane, William John, lawyer, author, was born in 1780 in Ireland. In 1833 he was secretary of the treasury; and was dismissed office by President Jackson for declining to order the deposits removed from the bank of the United States. He was the author of The Law of Nations Investigated; Letters on Internal Improvement and Narrative and Correspondence Concerning the Removal of the Deposits, 1838.
