In 1898 he took part in the battle of Manila bay; and retired with the rank of rear-admiral of the United States navy. Dyer, Oliver, educator, journalist, author, was born April 26, 1834, in Porter, N.Y. In 1848 he was a reporter in the United States senate. He was on the reportorial staff of the New York Tribune; and subsequently on the editorial staff of the New York Sun. He was the author of The Wickedest Man in New York; and Great Senators of the United States Forty Years Ago. He died in 1907 in Cottage City, Mass. Dyer, Sidney, clergyman, author, hymnwriter, was born Feb. 11, 1814, in Cambridge, N.Y. He was a baptist clergyman; subsequently moving to Philadelphia; and was well known as a song-writer. Eagle, James Phillip, soldier, legislator, cotton-planter, clergyman, governor, was born Aug. 10, 1837, in Maury county, Tenn. He received the rudiments of his education in the common schools of Arkansas, to which state he was taken by his father when but two years of age; and attended the Mississippi college for one year. During the civil war he served in the confederate army; and attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1874 he was a member of the convention which framed the present state constitution of Arkansas. He served three terms as a member of the Arkansas state legislature; and was speaker of the house in 1885. In 1888-93 he served two terms as governor of Arkansas.
