Egbert, James Chidester, educator, author, was born in 1859 in New York City. Since 1900 he has been professor of Roman archaeology and epigraphy at Columbia university. He is the author of MacMillan's Shorter Latin Course and Introduction to the Study of Latin Inscriptions.

Egbert, Joseph, congressman, was born in Richmond, N.Y. In 1841-43 he was a representative from New York to the twentyseventh congress. He died in New York. Ege, George, iron-master, jurist, was born March 9, 1748. In 1795-97 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fourth congress to fill a vacancy; and was associate judge in 1790-1818 of Berks county, Pa. He died Dec. 14, 1839, in Berks county, Pa.

Eggleston, Benjamin Osro, painter, artist, was born Jan. 22, 1867, in Belvidere, Minn. In 1891 he contributed The Model to the academy of design. He painted Indolence; A June Morning; and many others. Eggleston, Beroth B., soldier, was born in New York. In 1861 he became captain in the first regiment Ohio cavalry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died May 27, 1891. Eggleston, Edward, clergyman, author, was born Dec. 10, 1837, in Vevay, Ind. He is a novelist who lived near Lake George, N.Y. and in the early part of his career was a methodist clergyman. He was the author of The End of the World; The Circuit Rider; Roxy; The Graysons, a story of Illinois; The Faith Doctor; The Hoosier Schoolboy; Queer Stories for Boys and Girls; Schoolmasters' Stories Mr. Blake's Walking Stick Duffels. Still other works are Sunday-school Manual; Counsel for Teachers; School History of the United States; Household His;

tory of the United States; First Book in American History; Stories of Great Americans; and The Beginners of a Nation, With his daughter, Mrs. Seelye, he has written Te-

cumseh and the Shawnee Prophet; Pocahontas; Brandt and Red Jacket; and Montezuma. He died Sept. 3, 1902, in Jones Lock, N.Y. Eggleston, George Gary, soldier, lawyer, journalist, author, was born Nov. 36, 1839, in Vevay, Ind. He is a brother of Edward Eggleston. During the civil war he served in the confederate army.

He became editor of Commercial Advertiser 1886, serving six years as literary editor of the Evening Post. For the last ten years he has been an editorial writer on the World. He is the author of How to Educate Yourself; A Man of Honor; A Rebel's Recollections; How to Make a Living; The Big Brother, a Story of Indian War Captain Sam Signal Boys ; The Wreck of the Red Bird; Strange Stories from History; Red Eagle; Southern Soldier Stories; and Juggernaut, Veiled Record; Two Gentlemen of Virginia; The Warriors of Virginia; and Irene of the Mountains. in

He served in the revolutionary war as a captain and major of cavalry under Colonel Henry Lee and was in several of the battles fought by Gates and Greene. He served in the Virginia assembly for several years; and in 1797-1801 he was a representative from Virginia to the fifth and sixth congresses; and in 1801-11 was a justice of the peace. He died Feb. 13, 1811, in Virginia.
