He conducted a select school at Williamstown, Mass.; and was one of the founders of the theological seminary of Chicago, 111. Egleston, Thomas, metallurgist, author, was born Dec. 9, 1832, in New York City. He is a metallurgist of note; and since 1864 has been professor of mineralogy at Columbia college. He was the author of Metallurgy of Silver; Catalogue of Minerals; Lectures on Mineralogy; and Life of John Patterson, Major-General in the Army of the Revolution. He died in 1900 in New York City.

Mass. Eichemeyer, Carl, manufacturer, inventor, author, was born Jan. 14, 1869, in Yonkers, N.Y. In 1893 he entered the employ of Eichemeyer and Osterheld manufacturing company; and while with this firm invented a hat making machine which was the first successful machine that will stretch the tip of the hat body automatical in one operation. He is a life member of the American museum of natural history; a fellow of the American geographical society; a member of the New York academy of sciences; and of American folk-lore society. He is the author of Over the Great Navajo Trail; Among the Pueblo Indians; and The Giant Killer. Eickemeyer, Rudolf, banker, inventor, was born Oct. 18, 1831, in Bavaria, Germany. In 1854 he began the construction of hat-making machinery in Yonkers, N.Y.; and these inventions effected a complete revolution in the manufacture of hats. He has also made numerous other inventions. Since 1898 he has been a director of the first national bank of Yonkers, N.Y. Eickemeyer, Rudolf, photographer, author. Since 1893 he has been a portrait and pictorial photographer. He is a director of the first national bank of New York City. He is the author of How to Make a Picture;

Eickhoff, Anthony, journalist, state legislator, congressman, author, was born Sept. 11, 1827, in Westphalia, Germany. He had editorial charge of newspapers at St. Louis, Dubuque, Louisville, and in 1852 settled in New York City. In 1863 he was appointed commissary general of subsistence of the state of New York; and was subsequently elected a representative in the New York state legislature. He was elected coroner of the city of New York in 1873; and in 187779 he was a representative from New York to the forty-fifth congress. In 1885 he was appointed auditor of the treasury for the state department; and in 1889 was made commissioner of the fire department of the city of New York. He is the author of History of German Immigration to the United States. Eidlitz, Cyrus Lazelle Warner, designer, architect, was born July 27, 1853, in New York City. Among the buildings that he has
designed are the Michigan Central railway station in Detroit; the Dearborn station in Chicago; and the Buffalo library.
