Emmet, William LeRoy, electrician, mecnanical engineer, author, was born July 10, 1859, in New Rochelle, N.Y. Since 1893 he has been in the service of the General electric company at Schenectady, N.Y. In 1881 he graduated from the United States naval academy; and served in the Spanish- American war. He is the author of Alternating Current Wiring and Distribution. Emmett, Daniel Decatur, soldier, musician, composer, was born in 1815 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He was a negro minstrel and song writer. In his youth he joined the regular army; in 1835 became a member of Oscar Brown's circus company; and in 1843, with Frank Brown, William Whitloek and Richard Phelam, formed what was the first negro minstrel company. In 1859 he wrote the famous song of Dixie. In 1865 he became independent manager; and in 1878 he returned to Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He was the author of hundreds of songs, including Old Dan Tucker, Boatman's Dance, The Road to Richmond, and many old-time favorites. He died June 38, 1904, in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Emmons, George Foster, naval officer, author, was born Aug. 33, 1811, in Clarendon, Vt. He was a rear-admiral in the United States service. He was the author of The Navy of the United States from 1775 to 1853. He died Julv 23, 1884, in Princeton, N.J.

born in 1815 in Glens Falls, N.Y. In 1870 he was appointed judge of the United States circuit court for the state of Michigan, but he exercised a much wider jurisdiction. Emmons, Nathaniel, clergyman, author, was bom April 30, 1745, in East Haddani, Conn. He was a noted congregational minister at Franklin in 1773-1840. His theological works in six volumes, with Memoir by J. Ide, appeared in 1843. He died Sept. 33, 1840, in Franklin, Mass.

born about 1780 in Boston, Mass. He lived in Kentucky, and wrote Fredonial, an epic poem in four volumes, a story of the war of 1813. He was subsequently a clerk in the postoffice department of Washington. He died in 1834 in Washington, D.C.

Mass. In 1887-89 he established the mechanical department of the high school of Washington, D.C. In 1889-91 he established and superintended the Trades school of the Massachusetts reformatory. He established and directed the Industrial training and technical high school for the city of Indianapolis, Ind. As superintendent he has built many of the buildings of the West Virginia university.
Emory, John, clergyman, author, was bom April 11, 1789, in Queen Anne county, Md. He was a methodist bishop; and the author of The Divinity of Christ Vindicated; and Defence of Our Fathers.
