He then became justice of the New York supreme court for the second judicial district; was appointed presiding judge in 1852; and judge of the court of appeals in 1863. He died Sept. 11, 1884, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Empie, Adam, clergyman, college president, was born Sept. 5, 1785, in Schenectady, N.Y. In 1827-36 he was president of William and Mary college. He resigned the presidency to become rector of St. James' church in Richmond, Va. He died' Nov. 6, 1860, in Wilmington. Empston, Cornelius, lawyer, jurist. In 1698 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of Pennsylvania. Emrie, Joseph Reece, congressman, was born in Ohio. In 1855-57 he was a representative from Ohio to the thirty-fourth congress.

died in Ohio.

Emswiler, George P., merchant, author, poet, was born Jan. 15, 1835, in York, Pa. He has a most extensive collection of coins; and a large collection of mound builders' relics which he 'donated to Eastham college of Richmond, Ind. He is the author of a volume entitled Poems and Sketches. Enander, John Alfred, journalist, diplomat, author, was born May 22, 1842, in Sweden. Since 1869 he has been editor of Swedish American newspapers; and is now editor of the Hemlandet of Chicago, 111. In 1879-83 he was a member of the Illinois state board of education; and in 1890-93 was professor of Swedish language and literature at Augustana college. He is the author of United States History, in Swedish. Endicott, Charles Moses, banker, author, was bom in 1793 in Danvers, Mass. He was at one time commander of a merchantman; and in 18935-58 cashier of the Salem Bank. He was the author of Life of John Endicott-, The Persian Poet, a tragedy; Rights and Duties of Nations; and Three Orations. He died in 1863 in Northampton, Mass. Endicott, Henry, manufacturer, director, was born Nov. 14, 1824, in Canton, Mass. In 1847 he established the firm of Allen and Endicott, manufacturers of steam engines

and boilers. He was director of the Cambridge gaslight company; and director of the First national bank. Endicott, John, colonial governor, was born in 1588 in England. He was colonial governor of Massachusetts in 1649-50, 1651-54 and 1655-65. He died March 15, 1665, in Boston, Mass. Endicott, Mordecai Thomas, civil engineer, naval officer, was bom Nov. 26, 1844, in May's Landing, N.Y. In 1874 he was appointed civil engineer in the United States navy; in 1898 was appointed chief of the bureau yards and docks in the navy depart-

ment with the rank of commodore; and in the same year he was advanced to the rank of rear admiral. He was a member of the Nicaragua canal board of 1895; and was

commission in 1905. Endicott, William, treasurer. He is treasurer of the permanent fund of the Boston young men's christian union. He is a member of the corporation of the Massachusetts institute of technology and chairman of the board of directors of the New England trust company, lie is also trustee of the Perkins institution and of the Massachusetts school for the blind; and a trustee of other institutions in Boston, Mass. Endicott, William Crowninshield, lawyer, jurist, cabinet officer, was born Nov. 19, 1827, in Salem, Mass. Since 1863 he has been president the Peabody academy of science of Salem, Mass. In 1873-82 he was associate justice of the supreme court of Massachusetts. He was the democratic candidate for governor of that state in 1884; and in 188589 he was secretary of war. He died May 6, ] 900, in Danvers Center, Mass. Endlich, Gustav Adolf, lawyer, jurist, author, was born Jan. 29, 1856, in Berks county. Pa. He was educated in Germany; and at Princeton college receiving the degree of A.M. in 1878. Since 1890 he has been judge of the twenty-third judicial district of Pennsylvania.
