and in 1853-61 he was a representative to the thirty -third, thirtyfourth, thirty-fifth and thirty-sixth congresses; and in 1880 was the democratic nominee for vice-president of the United States. For fourteen years lie was president of the First national bank of Indianapolis; and was president of the Indiana Historical society. He was the author of the noted workentitled Conquest of the Northwest and History of Indiana. He died Feb. 7, 1896, In Indianapolis, Ind. Enloe, Benjamin Augustine, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Jan. 18, 1848, in Clarksburg, Tenn. He was a member of the state house of representatives in 186970. He was president of the Tennessee Press association in 1883-84; and edited the Jackson Tribune and Sun in 1874-86. In 1887-95 he was a representative from Tennessee to the fiftieth, fifty-first fifty-second and fiftythird congresses as a democrat. He graduated from the United States military academy at West Point. In 1864 he was commissioned second lieutenant of the fourth artillery; and in 1904 was retired at his own request with the rank of brigadier-general. Enochs, William Henry, soldier, lawyer, congressman, was bom March 29, 1842, in Middleburg, Ohio. He served through the

erected the Fifth avenue hotel, which he at his death, together with other real estate in that city, valued at many millions. He bequeathed $150,000 to the New York chamber of commerce, and $120,000 to various charities. He died Feb. 21, 1898, in New York City. Enos, Roger, soldier, was born in 1729 in Sunsbury, Conn. He was appointed brigadier-general in command of all the Vermont troops in 1781; and became major-general of the first Vermont division in 1787; and resigned in 1791, after thirty-two years ot continuous military service. He was a member of the Vermont board of war in 178192, and of the state assembly, and was on the committee to settle the New Hampshire and Vermont controversy. He was one of the most prominent actors and most honored figures in Vermont history. He died Oct. 6, 1808, in Colchester, Vt.

Ensign, Orville Hiram, electrical and mechanical engineer, was born July 8, 1863, in Ithaca, N.Y. He has been in private work since 1883. He planned and constructed the first successful thirty thousand volt long distance transmission line in the world. This company was consolidated with the Edison electrical company; and he became chief electrical and mechanical engineer. He is now engaged in the United States reclamation service.

Enos, Amos Richards, merchant, banker, philanthropist, was born Nov. 1, 1810, at Sunsbury, Conn. He became a successful wholesale dry goods merchant in New York City ; and was a founder and principal stockholder in the Second national bank, of which his son, John C. Enos, was the president.

He is now a member of the law firm of Davis, Ensor, and Davis of Chicago, HI., engaged exclusively in the practice of contract, corporation and commercial law. Ent, Wellington Harry, soldier, was born in Pennsylvania. In 1861 he became captain in the sixth regiment Pennsylvania reserves; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers. He died Nov. 5, 1871. Entwistle, James, naval ofiicer, was bom in 1837 in Paterson, N.J. He entered the United States navy in the engineer service in 1861; and was commissioned lieutenant in 1866. In 1899 he became rear admiral in the United States navy and was retired. He took part in the battle of Manila in 1898 j was highly commended by Admiral Dewey; and was awarded the Dewey medal. '
