Cochran, John Webster, inventor, was born 16, 1814, in Enfield, N.H. In 1834 he invented a revolving, breechloading rifled cannon, in which the cylinder was automatically rotated by the cocking of the hammer. This same principle afterward secured the success of the revolving pistol.

In 1897-1903 he served as judge of the sixth circuit court of Illinois; and is now serving his second term of 1903-09 as circuit judge of Hlinois. lic

Cochrane, Clark B., lawyer, merchant, poet, was born Feb. 9, 1843, in New Boston, N.H. He is the author of Minora and Other Poems. Cochrane, Henry Clay, brigadier-general the United States marine corps, was born Xov. 7, 1842, in Chester, Pa. He was educated at the Upland normal school and at the Friends' central high in

school of Philadelphia, Pa. As an officer of the United States marine corps he has filled

the grades from second lieutenant to brigadier-general. In 1900 he was in command of the first regiment marines in China and in 1901 was in command of the first brigade of marines in Uie Philippines. He is now president of the Chester board of trade. Since 1905 he has held the rank of brigadier-general United States marine corps, now retired; and resides in Chester, Pa. Cochrane, John, soldier, surveyor, lawyer, congressman, was born Aug. 37, 1813, in Palatine, N.Y. He was surveyor of the port of New York for four years; and in 1857-61 he was a representative to the thirty-fifth and thirty-sixth congresses. He served as a.' general of volunteers in the union army in 1861-62; and was subsequently elected attorney-general of the state of New York. In 1864 he was nominated for the office of vice-president of the United States on the ticket with J. C. Fremont. In 1863-65 he was attorney-general of the United States; and has several times been a member of the New York City council, and acting mayor. He all
