Cocke, James Richard, physician, surgeon, author, was born ilarch 23, 1863, in Knoxville, Tenn. He was educated at the university of Tennessee; attended the medical schools of the university of Pennsylvania; and studied in the Boston university. Harvard university, and studied in the university of Berlin, Germany. For two years he was a teacher in the Tennessee school for the blind. He is a, physician of Boston, Mass. He is the author of Hypnotism; and Blind Leaders of the Blind, a novel. Cocke, John, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1772 in Brunswick, Va. He became a member of the first legislature of the state in 1796; was speaker of the house for many years; and was also a member of the state senate. In 1819-27 he was a representative to the sixteenth, seventeenth, eighteenth

and

nineteenth congresses. He died Feb. 16, 1854, in Eutledge, Tenn. Cocke, John, soldier, was born in New Jersey. In 1898-99 he served in the SpanishAmerican war; and is now second lieutenant in the eleventh cavalry at Havana. Cocke, Philip St. George, soldier, was born in 1808 in Virginia. He was made brigadiergeneral in the confederate army in 1861;

and commanded the fifth brigade at the first battle of Bull Run. He died Dec. 26, 1861. Cocke, William, soldier, United States senator, jurist, was born in 1740 in Virginia. He became a general of militia served in the state legislature in 1813; and became

one of the judges of the circuit court; in 1795-1805 he was United States senator; and in 1814 was appointed Indian agent tor the Chickasaw nation. Cocke, William M., congressman, was born in Tennessee. In 1845-49 he was a representative from Tennessee to the twenty-ninth and thirtieth congresses. He died in Tennessee.

Cockran, William Bourke, lawyer, orator, congressman, wag born Feb. 28, 1854, in Ireland. He came to the United States in 1871; and became principal of a public school in Winchester county, N.Y. He began the practice of law in New York; and was soon prominent in politics of the state. In 188789 and 1901-09 he was a representative from

New York to the fiftieth, fifty-seventh, fifty, eighth, fifty-ninth and sixtieth congresses. Cockrell, Jeremiah Vardaman, 1 awyer, congressman, was born May 7, 1832, in John-
