Flickinger, Henry W., soldier, educator, penman, author, was born Aug. 30, 1845, in
Perry county, Pa. He served in the civil war in the one hundred and fourth regiment Pennsylvania volunteers. He assisted the Spencerian authors in the revision of the Spencerian system; and in 1875 was associated with Lyman P. Spencer in preparing a large and elaborate collection of pen work displayed at the Centennial exhibition at Philadelphia in 1876. In 1877-81 he was principal of Bloomfield academy; and in 1881-84 was superintendent of schools for Perry county. Pa. In 1887 he was a representative in the Pennsylvania state legislature. In 1888-93 he practiced law in Pueblo, Col.; and in 1891 was a representative in the Colorado state legislature. In 1893-96 he filled the chair of history in the state normal school at West Chester, Pa.; in 1896-99 was principal of the state normal school at Edinboro. Pa.; and since 1899 has been principal of the state normal school at Lock Haven, Pa. In 1902 he was president of the Pennsylvania state educational association; and is a member of several historical and scientific associations. He is the author of Civil Government as Developed in the States and the United States.
