For a time he practiced law; but later he studied for the ministry; and in 1899 he was consecrated protestant episcopal missionary bishop of Idaho.

Funston, Edward H., soldier, farmer, congressman, was born in 1836 in Clark county, Ohio. In 1861 he entered the union army as a lieutenant; and served throughout the He was a representative in the civil war. Kansas legislature in 1873-75, and in the latter year was speaker of the house. In 1880 he was elected a state senator, and was made president of the senate pro tempore. In 1885-93 he was a representative from Kansas to the forty-ninth, fiftieth, fifty-first, and fifty-second congresses as a republican.

Funston, Frederick, soldier, botanist, was born Nov. 9, 1865, in Ohio. In 1891 he was botanist in the United States death valley expedition; and in 1893 was commander of the department of agriculture to explore Alaska and report on its flora. In 1896 he joined the insurgent army in Cuba; and later went to the Philippines, where he was promoted to brigadier-general of United States army for acts of bravery. Furber, Henry Jewett, lawyer, author, was born May 15, 1865, in Green Bay, Wis. In 1886 he graduated with the degree of B.S. from the university of Chicago; and in 1886-90 studied in the university of BerVienna, Leipzig lin, and Halle; and has the degrees received of A.M., Ph.D. and B. He studied law in S.

university law school; and in 1892-94 was professor of economics in that institution. In 1897-1900 he was first vice-president of the National life insurance company of Washington, D.C.; and since 1897 has practiced law in New York City. He is the author of several works in German; and various contributions to economical journals.

James Henry, educator, college was born Sept. 27, 1837, in Logan county, Ky. In 1875-80 he was president of Liberty college of Glasgow, Ky. In 1880-93 he was professor of latin and Greek; in 1893-1903 was professor of mathematics, and for five years was president of president,

Bethel college. Since 1903 he has been superintendent of public instruction in Kentucky. Furches, David Mofiitt, lawyer, jurist, was born April 21, 1832, in Davie county, N.C. In 1857 he was admitted to the North Carolina bar. In 1892 he was republican candidate for governor of North Carolina. Since 1894 he has been associate justice of the supreme court of North Carolina. Furey, John Vincent, soldier. In 1861 he enlisted as a private soldier in the eightyfourth regiment New York infantry; and in 1864 was captain and assistant quartermaster United States volunteers. In 1867 he filled the same position in the United States army; in 1887 he became lieutenantcolonel and deputy quartermaster-general; and in 1898 colonel and quartermaster United States volunteers. He was educated at DeVeaux college at Niagaga Falls, N.Y.; at the Massachusetts normal art school; at Cornell and Harvard universities; and studied in Paris. Since 1906 iie has been hesid of the art department of the summer session of Cornell university. He has illustrated magazines and books. His pictures have been exhibited at the Pennsylvania academy of fine arts. He discovered the wreck of a United States vessel sunk in 1804 in Tripoli harbor.

nology; and other works. Furman, Gabriel, lawyer, statesman, was born Jan. 23, 1800, in Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1827-30 he was a justice of the Brooklyn municipal court. He served as state senator in 1839-42. He was the author of Notes, Geographical and Historical, relative
