Furman, James Clement, educator, college president, founder, was bom Dec. 5, 1809, in Charleston, S.C. In 1843 he accepted a professorship in the Furman Theological institution; and when the institution was expanded into Furman university he was made its president. He died March 3, 1891, in Greenville, S.C.

in-Esopus, N.Y. In 1787 he became pastor of the First baptist church in Charleston, S.C, in which relation he continued for thirty-seven years. He was' a member of the convention that framed the first constitution of South Carolina. He died in August, 182.5, in Charleston, S.C. Furnas, Elwood, educator, public official, was born on Feb. 22, 1840, in Montgomery county, Ohio. He received his education in the district schools of his county; and at the age of nineteen began teaching school. He filled all the public positions of honor in the gift of the public, including township, county, state and national public offices of honor. He was chairman of the auditing board of the Story county farmers' mutual fire and lightning association, and vicepresident and director of the same; president of the Story county farmers' institute, and organizer of the same; and in 1893 he became president of the Farmers' national alliance. He was a delegate to the Farmers' national congress in 1898 and 1899; and the sfime year was elected as president of the Story county agricultural society. He died in 1902 in Nevada, Iowa. Furnas, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth, orthographist, philanthropist, was born Feb. 20, 1842, near Vandalia, Ohio. Miami county, Ohio. He was the third governor of Nebraska in 1873-75. During the civil war he was colonel in second Nebraska cavalry; and has been brigadiergeneral Nebraska militia. He was United States Indian agent; president Nebraska state historical society; president territorial pioneers; president Nebraska grand army of the republic; commissioner to centennial, world's Columbian and other expositions; and regent university of Nebraska. He died in 1905 in Brownville, Neb.

Fumess, Mrs. Helen Kate Rogers, author, was born July 26, 1837, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was a Shakespearean scholar of Philadelphia; and the author of A Concordance She died to the Poems of Shakespeare. Oct. 30, 1883, in Philadelphia, Pa.

and Midsummer Night's IDream. Fumess, William Henry, clergyman, author was bom April 20, 1802, in Boston, Mass. In 1825-75 he was pastor of the unitarian church of Philadelphia, Pa. He was the author of The Unconscious Truth of the Four Gospels; Jesus and His Biographers; History of Jesus; Thoughts on the Life and Character of Jesus; The Story of the Resurrection Told Once More The Power of Spirit; Discourses; The Veil Lifted and Jesus becoming Visible; Verses; Translations and Hymns;, The Faith of Jesus; and a muchadmired translation of Schiller's Song of the Bell. He died Jan. 30, 1896, in Philadelphia, Pa.
