1864 he was a drummer boy in the Massachusetts infantry. For twelve years he was an active member of the Boston school committee; and for four years was its president. In 1883 he was a member of the Massachusetts state senate, declining a renomination; and also twice declined a congressional nomination. For five years he was president of the Boston art club. Gallagher, Hugh P., clergyman, philanthropist, founder, was born in 1815 in Ireland. In 1844 he became president of the Theological seminary of Pittsburg, Pa. The same year he founded St. Francis' college for boys; and also founded and edited the Pittsburg Catholic. In 1850 he introduced the sisters of mercy, for whom he established St. Aloysius' academy for girls.
