He resigned to become judge of the superior court of Louisiana. He died in Louisiana. Garland, Samuel, soldier, was born Dec. He was chosen 16, 1830, in Lynchburg, Va. captain of a volunteer company that was organized in 1859; was comissioned a colonel by the governor of Virginia on the secession of the state; and was engaged at the first battle of Bull Run. He died Sept. 14, 1862, in South Mountain, Md. Garlington, Ernest A., soldier, author, was born Feb. 20, 1853, in Newberry Court House, S.C. He commanded the Greely relief expedition in 1883; in 1890 was severely wounded in battle with hostile Indians at Wounded Knee post office; and was awarded a congressional medal of honor for distinguished gallantry in that action. Garner, Peter M., abolitionist, educator, 4, 1809, in Lancaster county. Pa. In 1847-60 he taught in the Ohio penitentiary at Columbus; and during the war had charge of the military prisoners. He died June 12, 1868, in Columbus, Ohio. Garner, Richard Lynch, soldier, philologist, author, was born Feb. 19, 1848, in Abingdon, Va. In 1864-65 he served in the confederate army in the third Tennessee cavalry. He studied divinity and medicine; traveled in Central America in scientific research and is best known for his researches upon the speech of apes and monkeys.
