He died July 29, 1896, in Baltimore, Md. Garrett, Thomas, abolitionist, was born Aug. SI, 1783, in Upper Darby, Pa. He assisted all fugitive slaves who applied to him on their way to freedom. He died Jan. 20, 1871, in Wilmington, Del. Garrett, William Ifobertson, soldier, educator, author, was born April 12, 1839, in
Williamsburg, Va. During the civil war he attained the rank of captain. In 1868-73 he was superintendent of schools of Giles .county, Texas; in 1891-98 was state superintendent of public instruction; and in 1899 became dean of Peabody normal college. He was the author of Garrett and Goodpasture's History of Tennessee; Geography of Tennessee; and other works. He died Feb. 12, 1904, in Nashville, Tenn. Garrido, Joaquin Diaz, treasurer of Guam, was born in Oct., 1846, in Agana, Guam. He received a thorough education; and graduated from the Agana seminary of Guam. He has filled numerous positions of trust and honor.

Garrigan, Philip Joseph, clergyman, bishop, was born in Ireland. He was educated in the public schools; at St. Charles college in Maryland; and in philological and theological studies at the

In 1875-88 he was pastor of St. B e r n a r d's church of Fitchburgh, Mass, He was called to assist as vice-rectestablishing a catholic university in Washington, D.C. Since 1886 he was been professor of practical obstetrics in the post-graduate medical school of New York City. He and is the author of Gastro-Elytrotomy; Practical Guide in Midwifery; and numerous contributions to medical literature. Garrison, Charles Grant, physician, law1849, in yer, jurist, was born Aug. 3, Swedesboro, N.J. He was made judge advocate general of New Jersey in 1884; and in 1882 he was made chancellor of the sician,
southern diocese of the protestant episcopal church of New Jersey. Since 1888 he has been an associate justice of the supreme court of New Jersey. Garrigus, Milton, soldier, educator, lawyer, statesman, was_ born on Sept. 27, 1831, in Wayne county,' Ind. For seventeen terms he taught school, and in 1859-60 was school examiner, and he was postmaster at Greentown. During the war he served as captain and acting adjutant on the staff of General Mason of the regular army during also

For three years he was superintendent of schools, and in 1878 was elected state senator, serving with distinction for four years. He was one of the founders of the Gas light company of Chicago; chief organizer of the Equitable gas light company of Baltimore; and president of the Missouri, pacific railroad. He died May 1, 1885, in New York City.
