Garretson, Arthur Samuel, railroad buildstatesman, was bom on Nov. 7, 1851, in Morgan county, Ohio. He built several railroads; and was for some years president of the Sioux City and northern railroad; and was president of the Sioux City, O'Neill and western railroad. In 1898 he was a democratic candidate for congress. Garretson, Freeborn, clergyman, was born Aug. 15, 1752, in Maryland. He preached in almost all the eastern states from Nova Scotia to the Gulf of Mexico. He died Sept. 26, 1827, in New York City. Garretson, Garret James, lawyer, jurist, was born July 16, 1847, in Newtown, N.Y. He has been surrogate of Queens county; since 1896 has been justice of the supreme court of the state of New York, for the second district, present term ending in 1910. soldier, Garretson, George Armstrong, banker, was born Jan. 30, 1844, in Columcounty, Ohio. He served in the biana United States volunteers during the civil war; in 1867 graduated from the United States military academy; and in 1867-70 was lieutenant in the fourth artillery. Since 1875 he has been in the banking business; is president of the bank of commerce national association, of Cleveland, Ohio; and a director in various railroads and business corporations. During the Spanish-American war he was a brigadier-general in the United States array. Garretson, James Edmund, physician, lecturer, author, was born Oct. 4, 1838, in Wilmington, Del. He was dean of the dental college of Philadelphia in 1879-95. He was the author of System of Oral Surgery; Odd Hours of a Physician; Thinkers and Thinker,

on the church; The Eternal Sacrifice, and Other Sermons; and The Philosophy of the Incarnation. Garrett, Andrew, conchologist, author, was born April 9, 1823, in Albany, N.Y. He explored many of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of South America, the East and West Indies; and was associated with shells collection of Louis Agassiz. His consisted of thirty thousand examples of about eight thousand species. He was the author of the Andrew Garrett Fische der Sudsee. He died Nov. 1, 1887, on the island of Huahine. Garrett, Edmund Henry, artist, author, was born Oct. 19, 1853, in Albany, N.Y. He has devoted much time to illustration and water color painting; and in 1890 received a medal at Boston. He has edited important collections of the Elizabethan and Victorian poets; and translated Carmen.

Garrett, Finis James, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Aug. 26, 1875, in Weakley county, Tenn. He was educated in the common schools; attended college at Clinton, Ky.; and in 1897 received the degree of A.B. from Bethel college of McKenzie, Tenn. In 1893 he was editor of the
Weakley County Democrat; and for two years edited the McKenzie Herald. He taught school; and in 1897-99 was principal of the high schools at Como, Tenn.; and was also principal of the high school department at Milan, Tenn. Since 1899 he has practiced law at Dresden, Tenn. In 1900-05 he was a master in chancery. In 1905-11 he was a representative from Tennessee to the fifty-ninth, sixtieth ty-first congresses as a democrat.
