C; and in 1775-76 was assistant to the commissary-general of South Carolina. In 1775 he was a member of the first provincial congress of South Carolina; and in the opening year of the revolutionary war he was secretary of the privy council. He died Aug. 21, 1782. in Charleston, S.C. Colcock, Richard Woodward, soldier, was born in South Carolina. In 1823 he entered the United States military academy as a cadet; and in 1826 graduated; and was made second lieutenant in the fourth regiment United States infantry. In 1835 he attained the rank of first lieutenant; and resigned from the army in 1836. He died Jan. 9, 1856, in South Carolina. Colcock, William Ferguson, lawyer, legislator, congressman, was born Nov. 5, 1804, in Charleston, S.C. In 1821 he graduated from the South Carolina college. In 1825 he began the practice of law at Coosawhatchie, S.C; and in 1838-48 was a member of the South Carolina house of representatives, serving as speaker in 1840-48. In 1848-52 he served two terms as a member of congress from South Carolina. In 1853-65 he was collector of the port of Charleston; and was also a regent of the Smithsonian institute of Washington, D.C. He died in 1889 in Charles-
sociation. Cole, Aaron Hodgman, educator, lecturer, biologist, scientist, was born Oct. 21, 1856, in Greenwich, N.Y. He was educated at
the Colgate university, Johns Hopkins university and the university of Chicago; and received the degrees of A.M. and A.B. Since
1906 he has been an instructor of biology in the normal school at Chicago, 111. Since 1895 he has been a popular lecturer on bacteriology. He is the inventor of scientific . apparatus, eye sliTelds, and of methods of highly magnifying on screen images of microscopic animals and plants. Golden, Cadwallader, physician, colonial governor, author, was born Feb. 17, 1688, in Scotland. He was a colonial physician; colonial-governor of New York in 1760-61, 176365, 1769-70 and 1775-76; and a prominent loyalist of his day. He was the author of The History of the Five Indian Nations and Principles of Actions on Matter. He died Sept. 28, 1776, in Long Island, N.Y.
Colden, Cadwallader David, lawyer, congressman, author, was born April 4, 1769, in Springfield, N.Y. He served in the New York state legislature; was district attorney of the United States for many years; and was at one time mayor of New York City. In 1821-23 he was a representative from New York to the seventeenth congress; and was an early and intimate friend of Robert Fulton, and wrote his biography. He published Life of Robert Fulton; and Vindication of the Steamboat Right Granted by the State of New York. He died Feb. 7, 1834, in Jersey City, N.J. Coldwell,
