was chief justice. He was professor of law in Iowa state university for eleven years. In 1876 he resigned his position as chief justice to devote his entire time to the practice of law. In 1893 he was made dean of the Iowa college of law, a department of the Drake university.

examiners of Montana. In 1887 he was president of the chamber of commerce of Helena and in 1889 was president of the state senate of Montana. In 1893 he was elected to
the chair of surgical diseases of women in the Tennessee medical college. He was one of the organizers and vice-president of the second national bank of Helena, Mont.; was one of the organizers and secretary of the national association of state examining and and was one of the orlicensing boards ganizers and first president of the American academy of railway surgeons. He is a fellow of the American surgical association; and is now practicing his profession in New York City. He is the author of several original
Monographs on surgical
subjects.
Cole, Cordelia Throop, prohibitionist, was born Nov. 17, 1833, in Hamilton, N.Y. For seven years she was secretary of the Iowa unitarian association; nine years state and national superintendent of the Woman's christian temperance union; and lecturer on White Cross and Social Purity, and speaker for Total Abstinence and Prohibition for more than twenty years. She is also one of the managing editors of the Dial of Progress of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Cole, Cornelius, journalist, lawyer, congressman. United States senator, was born Sept. 17, 1833, in Lodi, N.Y. He was district attorney of Sacramento for two years; and in 1863-65 he was a representative from California to the thirty-eighth congress. In 1867-73 was a United States senator.
Cole, David, educator, clergyman, theologian, author. He was professor of Greek language and literature at Rutgers college; and became pastor of the reformed church at Yonkers, N.Y. He is the author of educational, religious, genealogical and historical
works.
Cole, Francis Richard, lawyer, orator, author, poet, was born prior to the great fire in Qiicago, 111. He is a noted lawyer of Chicago, 111.; and in 1893 was a candidate for
judge of the supreme court on the labor reform ticket. He is a lecturer on medical jurisprudence in the Dutton medical college; and is president of the Citizens' sovereignty association. He is the author of Civilization, Bryan and the Times. Cole, Frank Nelson, educator, mathematician, was born Sept. 30, 1861, in Ashland, Mass. In 1887 he became professor of mathematics in the university of Michigan; and since 1895 has held that professorship in the Columbia university. Cole, Frank Theodore, lawyer, educator, author, was born June 33, 1853, in Brattleboro, Vt. In 1880 he was admitted to the bar. He has been principal of the Columbus latin school; and is now principal of the university school of Columbus, Ohio. He is the author of Cole Genealogy; and Glea-
son Genealogy. Cole, George W., soldier, was born in New York. In 1861 he became captain in the twelfth regiment New York volunteer infantry; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadiergeneral of volunteers.
