Gerrish, Frederic Henry, physician, author, was born March 31, 1845, in Portland, Me. In 1879-91 he was visiting surgeon to the Maine general hospital of Portland; and the consulting surgeon since 1892. He was president of the Maine state board of health in 1885-89; and president of the American academy of medicine in 1887-88. In 1908-09 he was president of the Ameri-

can therapeutic society. He is the author of Antiseptic Surgery; Prescription Writing; Textbook of Anatomy; and other works. Gerrish, Theodore, soldier, clergyman, author, was born June 19, 1846. He served in

the twentieth Maine regiment during the civil war; and was wounded four times. He is the author of Army Life; Wili -N-wton, the Young Volunteer; Life in the Vvorld's Wonderland; The Blue and the Gray, an army history; and Reminiscences of the war. He moved to his native city; and again went to the legislature, serving one year in the house and two years in ihe state senate. He is the author of Boy Life in the Country; Tom's Island ; Meadow Melodies, a volume of poems and other works. Gerry, Elbridge, governor, vice-president of the United States, signer of the declaration of independence, was born July 17, 1744, in Marblehead, Mass. He was a member of the legislature in 1773. In 177685 he was a delegate from Massachusetts to the continental congress; and signed the declaration of independence, and also the articles of confederation. In 1789-93 he was a representative to the first and second congresses; and in 1797 was appointed minister to France. He was the ninth governor of Massachusetts in 1810-13. In 181317 he was vice-president of the United States; and filled the office until his death. He died Nov. 33, 1814, in Washington, D.C. In 1874 he was in the society for the prevention of cruelty to children; and has been its president. Gerry, James, congressman, was born in Maryland. In 1839-43 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the twenty-sixth and twenty-seventh congresses. He died in Pennsylvania. Gerry, Robert, merchant, statesman, was born Jan. 9, 1858, in Ellsworth, Maine. He received, his education in the public schools of his native city, and at Eastman business He is a succollege of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. cessful merchant of Pasco, Wash.; in 188185 he was assistant postmaster of Walla Walla; was treasurer of Franklin county in 1891-93; and in 1893 was mayor of Pasco. He has served three successive terms in 1895-1900 as a representative in the Washington state legislature. Gerry, Samuel Lancaster, artist, was born May 10, 1813, in Boston, Mass. He was an original member of the Boston art club; and was its president in 1858. He was the author of The Gorge of the Rhine; The Old Man of the Mountain; Pasture Gate; and Land of Beulah. Napoleon, journalist, author, poet, was born Oct. 18, 1863, in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1891 he has been editor and manager of the Jewish Exponent of Philadelphia, Pa. He is the author of a volume entitled Some Verses. Gerson, Oscar, educator, author, was born in Philadelphia, Pa. Since 1, 1874, 1905 he has been professor of literature at the Central manual training high school; and also professor of pedagogy at the Temple college of Philadelphia, Pa. He is part author of Brief Topical Survey of United States History; Physiology Primer; Geography Primer; and History Primer. Gerster, Arpad Geyza Charles, surgeon, author, was born Dec. 23, 1848, in Hungary. In 1882-94 he was professor of surgery at the New York polyclinic; and since 1878 he has been surgeon to the German hospital of New York City. He is the author of The Rules of Septic and Antiseptic Surgery. Gervais, John Lewis, congressman, was born Oct. 8, 1753, in Germany. In 1783-83 he was a delegate from South Carolina to the continental congress. He died Oct. 2, 1798, in Charleston, S.C.
