She was the founder of the system of thought known as the Science of Being. Getman, Frederick Hutton, chemist, lecturer, author, was born Feb. 9, 1878, in Oswego, N.y. He was educated at the King's school for boys; at the Rensselaer polytechnic institute of Troy, N.Y. ; at the Lehigh university ; attended the university of Pennsylvania; and 1903 graduated in from the Johns Hopkins university with the degree of Ph.D. In 1897 he was a teacher of chemistry and physics at the Stamford high school; in 1902-03 was a fellow

Since 1905 he has been an instructor in physical science at the Stamford high school of Connecticut. He is the author of Blowpipe Analysis; and Laboratorv Exercises in Physical Chemistry. Gettemy, Charles Ferris, journalist, author, was born March 12, 1868, in Chicago, He received the degrees of A.M. and 111. A.B. from Knox college and A.B. from

college.

He

has been a corresponBoston dent of the Daily Advertiser and of the Boston Herald. In 1905-07 he was secGovernor retary to Curtis Guild of Massachusetts. Since 1907 he has been chief of the Massachusetts bureau of statistics of labor. He is the author of The True Story of Paul Revere; and The Cost of Municipal Grovernment in Massachusetts; and is a contributor to leading magazines.

He received his edi^cation at the Smithville academy of Ohio; graduated from the Ohio normal university in 1879; and from the law department of the Michigan university in 1883. He has been circuit court commissioner; master in chancery; and is general counsel for several of the largest life insur-

ance companies. Getty, George Washington, soldier, was born Oct. 30, 1819, in Georgetown, D.C. He fought against the Seminoles in 1849-50 and 1856-67; and took part in quelling the KanDuring the sas disturbances of 1857-58. civil war he attained the rank of brigadiergeneral. In 1883 he retired from active service.

Lawrence, lawyer, journalist, congressman, was born Sept. 14, 1821, in Reading, Pa. He was for twenty years the editor of the Reading Gazette and Democrat. Geyer, Henry Sheffie, soldier, lawyer. United States senator, was born Dec. 9, 1790, in Fredericktown, Md. He was an active member of the first two sessions of the state legislature, and was chosen speaker during In 1851-57 he was United his second term. Gherardi, Bancroft, naval officer, was bom Nov. 10, 1832, in Jackson, La. He entered the navy from Massachusetts as midshipman in 1846. He was made lieutenantcommander in 1862; commander in 1866; captain in 1874; commodore in 1884; rearadmiral in 1887; and about 1902 was retired from active service. He died Deo. 10, 1903, in Stratford. Conn.
