Gordon, Adoniram Judson, clergyman, author, was born April 19, 1836, in New Hampton, N.H. He was pastor of the Clarendon baptist church of Boston in 1869-95. He was the author of Grace and Glory; In Christ; Ministry of Healing; The Ministry of the Spirit; The Life that Now Is and That to Come; The Holy Spirit in Missions and Ecce Venit. He died Feb. 2, 1895, in Boston, Mass.


Gordon, Ambrose, soldier, merchant, was born May 31, 1750, in Monmouth, N.J. At the termination of the revolutionary war he accepted grants of land from the state of Georgia for military services; and went into business in Augusta, Ga. He died June 28, 1804, in Augusta, Ga.


Gordon, Anna Adams, lecturer, author, was born July 21, 1853, in Boston, Mass. She was the private secretary of Frances E. Willard from 1877 until Miss Willard's death in 1898. She has written the song books of the Loyal Temperance Legions and also the songs for Woman's temperance work, The White Ribbon Hymnal. She is the author of The White Ribbon Birthday Book; and of The Beautiful Life of Frances E. Willard; and other works.


Gordon, Archibald D., author, was born in 1848 in Ireland. He was a dramatic critic and playwright of New York City; and the author of The Ugly Duckling; and That Girl From Mexico. He died in 1895 in New York City.


Gordon, Charles Benjamin William, clergyman, journalist, author, was born Nov. 1, 1861, in Colerain, N.C. He was educated at the Union university of Richmond, Va. He has attained success as a pastor of the baptist church of Petersburg, Va.; and since 1886 has been editor of The National Pilot. He is founder of the American institute and the National orphan home; and has been president of the national orphan and educational association since 1891. He is the author of Select Sermons.


Gordon, Armistead Churchill, lawyer, author, was born Dec. 20, 1855, in Albemarle county, Va. In 1873-75 he attended the university of Virginia; and subsequently received the honorary degree of LL.D. from William and Mary college of Virginia. Since 1879 he has practiced law in Staunton, Va.; has been city attorney and commonwealth attorney; and served as mayor of his city. He is a visitor and rector of the university of Virginia; and since 1903 has been chairman of the state library board of Virginia. He is the author of Befo' de War; For Truth and Freedom; Poems of Commemoration; Envion and Other Tales of Old and New Virginia; The Gay Gordons; The Gift of the Morning Star; The Ivory Gate; and a Virginian of the Old School.


Gordon, Charles Henry, geologist, scientist, was born May 10, 1857, in Caledonia, N.Y. Since 1905 he has been a geologist in the United States geological survey.


Gordon, Charles William, clergyman, author, was born in 1860 in Canada. Since 1894 he has been pastor of St. Stephens church at Winnipeg, Canada. He is the author of Black Rock; Beyond the Marshes; and The Man From Glengarry.


Gordon, Clarence, author, was born April 28, 1835, in New York City. He was special agent of the United States census bureau in 1879-83; in charge of the meat production in the grazing states; and has since been engaged in real-estate business. He is the author of Christmas at Under Tor; Our Fresh and Salt Tutors; Two Lives in One; and Boarding-School Days.


Gordon, David Stuart, soldier, was born May 23, 1832, in Franklin county. Pa. He was educated in the public and private schools in the country and in the commercial school of Baltimore, Md. In 1861 he was appointed from Kansas as second lieutenant of the second dragoons; and in the same year became first lieutenant of the second cavalry. In 1863 he was promoted captain; in 1877 was promoted major; in 1889 was promoted lieutenant-colonel; in 1892 became colonel; in 1896 was appointed brigadier-general; and in 1904 was retired. He was engaged in the battle of Bull Run; was at Gettysburg; and took part in the battles of Manassas Gap, Todd's Tavern, Cold Harbor, Trevillia Station and other places. He was engaged in frontier service and in battles with the Indians. He is now connected with the Washington office of the Mutual life insurance company.


Gordon, E. J., congressman. He was a resident of Condersport, Pa. In 1895 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the fifty-third congress.


Gordon, Edward Clifford, clergyman, college president, was born on Sept. 1, 1842, in Richmond, Va. In 1892-98 he was president of the Westminster college of Fulton, Mo.; and since then has filled a pastorate in the presbyterian church at Lexington, Mo.


Gordon, Fred George Russ, shoemaker, socialist, author, was born Sept. 4, 1860, in Walden, Vt. In 1895 he was secretary of the great Boston shoemakers' convention. He is the author of The Cause and Cure; Hard Times; Government Ownership of Railroads; and Municipal Socialism.
