as captain of infantry in the confederate army; and held the rank of major-general at the close of the war. In 1873-81 and 1891-97 he was United States senator. He was the thirty-second governor of Georgia in 1886-90. He died Jan. 9, 1904, in Biscoyne, Fla.

Gordon, Joseph Claybaugh, educator, author, was born March 9, 1843, in Piqua, Ohio. In 1897 he became superintendent of the Illinois institution for the education of the deaf. He was the author of Education of Deaf Children; and Notes and Observations on the Education of the Deaf. He died in 1903 in Jacksonville, 111.
