Comstock, Anthony, soldier, reformer, auwas born March 7, 1844, in New Canaan Conn. He was educated in the district schools thor,
at Wyckoff academy at New Canaan; and at the high school at New Britain, Conn. He left school in 1861 and enlisted in the seven-
teenth regiment Connecticut volunteer infantry. He served under General GiUuore in the third separate brigade of the department of the south. In 1865 he was mustered out; and since then has been postoffice inspector of New York. As secretary and special agent of the New York society for the supression of vice, he has brought over three million to justice; and has destroyed a hundred tons of obscene literature and pictures. He is the author of Fraud E.xiposed Gambling Outrages; Morals vs. Art; and Traps for the Young. Comstock, Charles Carter, manufacturer, congressman, was born March 5, 1818, in Sullivan, N.H. He was mayor of Grand Rapids in 1863-64; was the democratic candidate for governor of Michigan in 1870; the people's candidate for congress in 1873; and the greenback candidate for congress in 1878. In 1885-87 he was a representative from Michigan to the forty-ninth congress. He died Feb. 20, 1900, in Grand Rapids, Mich. ,

He was United States entomologist during 1879-81; and is now a professor of entomology and general invertebrate zoology at Cornell university. He is the author of Notes on Entomology; Report on Cotton Insects;. Introduction to Entomology; and A Manual for the Study of Insects. Comstock, John Lee, author, was bom in 1789 in Lyme, Conn. He was the author of The Elements of Chemistry; Introduction to Mineralogy; System of Natural Philosophy; History of the Precious Minerals; and Natural History of Quadrupeds.
