In 1869-72 he was one of the founders of the Metropolitan museum of art of New York City; and was lecturer there in 1898. In 1869 he organized the Philological association; and was its secretary in 1869-74. In 1872 he became professor of esthetics and modern languages in Syracuse university; in 1873 originated and organized the college of fine arts in that institution and was its dean in 1873-93. In 1896 he organized the Syracuse museum of fine arts, of which he has always been director. In 1901 he organized the Central New York society of artists. He is the author of Art Museums in America; Modern Languages in Education; and a series of text books on the study of the German Language and Literature. Comly, James M., soldier, journalist, diplo;

Commons, John Rogers, educator, author, was born Oct. 13, 1852, in Darke

He has been a professor of sociology at Syracuse university since 1895; as is also professor of department of trusts and transportation of the bureau of economic research in New York City. He is the author of The Distribution of Wealth; Social Reform and the Church; and" Proportional Representation. Compton, Alfred George, educator, mathematician, author, was bom Feb. 1, 1835, in London, England. He was professor of applied mathematics and now professor of physics at college City of New York. ComptOD, Barnes, statesman, congressman,

was born Nov. 16, 1830, in Port Tobacco, Md. He was elected a representative in the state legislature in 1859 without opposition; and was in 1866-74 was state senator; elected president of the senate. In 1874-85 he was treasurer of the state. In 1885-93 he was a representative from Maryland to the forty-ninth, fiftieth and fifty-second congresses. He died Dec. 2, 1898, in Laurel, Del.

Compton, Charles Elmer, soldier, was born Jan. 28, 1831 in Morristown, N.J. He served throughout the civil war; and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was then transferred to the regular army; and In 1890 was made colonel for distinguished services in leading gallant charge against Indians on Red river, Texas. He was appointed brigadier-general of voluneeers in 1898 in the Spanish-American war.

Compton, F. W., lawyer, jurist. In 1859 he was an associate justice of the supreme court of Arkansas. Comstock, Addison J., pioneer, was born Oct. 17, 1802, in Palmyra, N.Y. In 1826 he built the first log house and sawmill in Adrian, Mich.; and in 1828 laid out the town of Adrian. He was appointed postmaster in 1829; and in 1832, with his father, projected the Erie and Kalamazoo railroad. He was elected mayor of Adrian in 1853. He died Jan. 20, 1867, in Adrian, Mich.

Comstock, Andrew, elocutionist, author, in 1795 in New York. He was a professor of elocution; and a lecturer on oratory. He was the author of a New System of Phonetics, Phonetic Speaker, Phonetic Testament Reader Historla Sacra and Elocution. He died in New York.

Comstock, Andrew Westbrook, pioneer, lumber manufacturer, banker, was born Oct. 5, 1838, in Port Huron, Mich. He has been mayor of Alpena; and president of the Alpena Banking company. His lumber firm operate not only in Alpena but in Canada and Mississippi.
