He was judge of the superior court of California in 1893-98. Conn, Charles Gerard, soldier, manufacturer, congressman, was born in 1844 in
Phelps, N.Y. He served throughout the civil war as a soldier in the union army. He is a. successful manufacturer of musical instruments at Elkhart, Ind. His instruments were awarded the highest honors and the best diploma at the World's Columbian exposition. In 1893-95 he was a representative from Indiana to the fifty-third congress. Conn, Herbert William, educator, scientist, was born in 1859 in Massachusetts. He is a biologist whose specialty is the bacteriology of milk; and has been instructor and professor of biology at Wesleyan university since 1888. He is the author of Evolution

Connell, William, banker, congressman, was born Sept. 10, 1837, in Cape Breton, N. S. He was placed in charge of the mines of the Susquehanna and Wyoming Valley railroad and coal company, with offices at Scranton, Pa.; and in 1870, the charter of that company lapsing, he purchased the plant and organized the firm of William Connell and company. was born July 6, 1846, in Canada. He received an academic education; he spent his boyhood days in Massachusetts and Vermont and since 1867 has lived in Omaha, Neb. In 1870 he was admitted to the bar;

attorney in 1873, and received the re-election two years later. In 1883 he was appointed city attorney of Omaha, and held that office for four years. In 1888 he was ekcted to the fiftyfirst United States congress, and served on numerous important committees. In 1890 he was defeated for congress by William J. Bryan. In 1893 he was re-appointed city attorney of Omaha, which position he held continuously for over ten years; and is now attorney for the Omaha street railway company and various other corporations. Connelly, Mrs. Celia Logan, journalist, dramatist, was born in 1837 in Philadelphia, Pa. She was a journalist and playwright of New York City. She is the author of Under American Marriage; Gaston Cadol and other plays; also Her Strange Fate; Larz, a story of the stage; and other plays. She died in 1904 in New York City. Connelly, Emma M., author, was born about 1835 in Kentucky. She is a writer of New York City. She is the author of Under the Surface; Tilting at Wind Mills, a Story of the Blue Grass Country; and The Story of Kentucky. Connelly, Henry, governor, was bom in Virginia. He moved to Kansas and in 186165 was governor of the territory of New
