Since 1907 he has been professor of mathematics and dean of the faculty of the Davis and Elkins college at Elkins, W.Va. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. He is the author of Monographs on mathematics and other scientific subjects. Converse, James B., clergyman, author, was born April 8, ] 844, in Philadelphia, Pa. In 1890-95 he was editor of the Christian Patriot. He is the author of A Summer Vacation Abroad; and Uncle Sam's Bible. Converse, John Heman, manufacturer, philanthropist, was born on Dec. 3, 1840, in Burlington, Vt. In 1861 he graduated from the university of Vermont and for three years was connected with the editorial staff and business management of the Burlington Daily and Weekly Times. In 1864-70 he was engaged in railroad work in Chicago and elsewhere. Since 1873 he has been a member of the firm of Burnhani, Williams and company, proprietors of the Baldwin locomotive

works at Philadelphia, Pa. He is a trustee of the university of Vermont, Girard college and other institutions; and in 1900 was vice-moderator of the general assembly of the presbyterian church of the United States. He has been president of the national relief commission during the Spanish-American war; president of the manufacturers' club of Philadelphia; president of the sound money league of Pennsylvania; and president of various other state and national institutions. He is much interested in educational work; and has delivered addresses on citizenship and technical education, on the twentieth

century university and kindred subjects at the university of Vermont and other institutions. The handsome dormitory building donated by him in 1895 to the university of Vermont has been named after

Converse, John Kendrick, educator, clergyman, was born June 15, 1801, in Lyme, N. H. In 1832-44 he was pastor of the congregational church of Burlington, Vt.; and 1844-70 was principal of the Burlington female seminary. For twenty-five years he was secretary of the Vermont colonization society. For several years he was superintendent of public schools. He died Oct. 3, 1880, in Burlington, Vt. Conway, Henry Warton, congressman, was born in Greene county, Tenn. In 1823-27 he was a territorial delegate from Arkansas to the eighteenth and nineteenth congresses. He died Feb. 38, 1892, in Little Rock, Ark.

He graduated from the Iowa state agricultural college, and was previously deputy recorder of Allamakee county, Iowa. Since 1884 he has been the editor and owner of the Champion of Norton, Kan. He is the author of two volumes of poems entitled Thrice Words; and Lancelot and Guinevere, a drama. Conway, Katherine Eleanor, journalist, author, poet, was born in 1853 in New York. She is on the editorial staff of the Pilot of Boston, Mass. She is the author of Songs of the Sunrise Slope; A Dream of Lilies, a first

volume of poems; A Lady and Her Letters; and Making Friends and Keeping Them. Conway, Martin F., printer, lawyer, congressman, was born in 1830 in Charleston, S. C. He took part in originating the national typographical union. He was elected to the council
