This essay is a description and analysis of the oil painting the Heart of the Andes by American landscape artist Frederic Edwin Church. This work was published posthumously in 1863 as part of the anthology Life in the Open Air and other papers.

As published, this work had no chapters or numbered sections. The work has been divided into sections here for purposes of presentation in this medium.
