A Dictionary of Music and Musicians/Variante

VARIANTE is the usual expression in Germany for varying versions or readings of a piece of music. Thus in the principal editions of Bach's instrumental works, besides the adopted text of a piece, other copies containing various changes are printed in an appendix, and entitled Varianten.
