Cairns, Sir Hugh McCalmont, created D.C.L. 17 June, 1863, lord high chancellor Feb. to Dec., 1868, and 1874-80, created Baron Cairns 27 Feb., 1867, and Viscount Garmoyle and Earl Cairns 27 Sep., 1878, knighted 17 March, 1858, solicitor-general Feb. to June, 1859, attorney-general July to Oct., 1866, a lord justice of appeal in Chancery 1866, privy councillor 1866, LL.D. Dublin 1862, and Cambridge 1862, chancellor of the University of Dublin 1867. M.P. Belfast 1852-66, bencher of Lincoln's Inn 1856, and Q.C., bar.-at-law, Middle Temple, 1844 (2nd son William Cairns, of Cultra, co. Down), died 2 April, 1885. See Foster's Peerage.
