William Bell was the son of the prominent auctioneer William Bell [1][2] (d. 1824) and his wife Jane, of Hull. His sister Elizabeth married John Leake [3] and moved with him to Australia. Bell was at first a merchant in Hull.

Bell published "The Stream of Time", an adaptation/translation of a work by Strass, in 1810 [4]. Shortly thereafter he published a collection of German poems. He received his PhD abroad [5] (probably in Germany) and joined a number of academic societies in the linguistic, historical, anthropological, archaelological, geographical, etc. fields. He published a number of books listed on this author page. He eventually became the administrator of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. He lived in London. He died at a conference in Bonn in 1868.
