CAPUT II
1. Eornustlīce þā sē Hǣlend ācenned wæs on Iudeiscre Bethleem, on þæs cyninges dagum Herodes, þā cōmon þā tungolwītegan fram ēastdǣle tō Hierusalem,[1]
2. and cwǣdon, Hwǣr[2] ys sē Iudea Cyning þe ācenned ys? Sōðlīce wē gesāwon hys steorran on ēastdǣle, and wē cōmon ūs him tō geēadmēdenne.[3]
3. Ðā Herodes þæt gehȳrde, ðā wearð hē gedrēfed and eal Hierosolimwaru mid him.[4]
4. And þā gegaderode Herodes ealle ealdras þǣra sācerda and folces wrīteras, and āxode hwǣr Crīst ācenned wǣre.[5]
5. Đā sǣdon hī him. On Iudeiscere Bethlem; witodlīce þus ys āwriten þurh þone wītegan,[6]
6. And þū Bethleem, Iudea land, witodlīce ne eart þū lǣst on Iuda ealdrum; of ðē forð gǣð sē heretoga sē þe recð mīn folc Israhel.[7]
7. Herodes þā clypode on sundersprǣce ðā tungelwītegan, and befrān hī georne hwænne sē steorra him ætēowde.[8]
8. And hē āsende hī tō Bethlem, and ðus cwæð, Farað and āxiað geornlīce be þām cilde; and þonne gē hyt gemētað, cȳþað eft mē, þæt ic cume and mē tō him gebidde.[9]
9. Đā hī þæt gebod gehȳrdon, þā fērdon hī; and sōþlīce sē steorra þe hī on ēastdǣle gesāwon him beforan fērde, oð hē stōd ofer þǣr þæt cild wæs.[10]
10. Sōþlīce þā ðā tungelwītegan þone steorran gesāwon, fægenodon swȳðe myclum gefēan.[11]
11. And gangende intō þām hūse hī gemētton þæt cild mid Marian hys mēder; and hī āðenedon hī, and hī tō him gebǣdon; and hī untȳndon hyra goldhordas, and him lāc brōhton, þæt wæs gold and rēcels and myrre.[12]
12. And hī āfēngon andsware on swefnum þæt hī eft tō Herode ne hwyrfdon; ac hī on ōðerne weg on hyra rīce fērdon.[13]
13. Þā hī þā fērdon, þā ætȳwde Drihtnes engel Iosepe on swefnum, and þus cwæð, Ārīs and nim þæt cild and his mōdor, and flēoh on Egypta land, and bēo þǣr oð þæt ic ðē secge; tōweard ys þæt Herodes sēcð þæt cild tō forspillenne.[14]
14. Hē ārās þā and nam þæt cild and his mōdor on niht, and fērde on Egyptum;[15]
15. and wæs þǣr oð Herodes forðsīð: þæt wǣre gefylled þæt ðe fram Drihtne gecweden wæs þurh ðone wītegan, Of Egyptum ic mīnne sunu geclypode.[16]
16. Đā wæs Herodes swȳde gebolgen, for þām þe he beþǣht wæs fram þām tungelwītegum, and hē āsende þā and ofslōh ealle þā cild þe on Bethleem wǣron, and on eallum hire gemǣrum, fram twȳwintrum cilde and binnan þām, æfter þǣre tīde þe hē geāxode fram ðām tungelwītegum.[17]
17. Đā wæs gefylled þæt gecweden wæs þurh Hieremiam þone wītegan,
18. Stefn wæs on hēhnysse gehȳred, wōp and mycel þotorung; Rachel wēop hyre bearn, and hēo nolde bēon gefrēfred, for þām þe hī nǣron.[18]
19. Sōðlīce þā Herodes wæs forð faren, witodlīce on swefne Drihtnes engel ætȳwde Iosepe on Egyptum,
20. and þus cwæð, Ārīs and nim þæt cild and his mōdor, and far on Israhela land; nū synd forð farene þe ðæs cildes sāwle sōhton.[19]
21. Hē ārās ðā and onfēng þæt cild and his mōdor, and cōm on Israhela land.[20]
22. Đā hē gehȳrde þæt Archelaus rīxode on Iudea þēode for ðone [fæder] Herodem,[21] hē ondrēd þyder tō faranne; and on swefnum gemynegod hē fērde on Galileisce dǣlas,[22]
23. and hē cōm þā and eardode on þǣre ceastre ðe is genemned Nazareth: þæt wǣre gefylled þæt gecweden wæs þurh ðone wītegan, for þām ðe hē Nazarenisc byð genemned.
