"For the Fallen" was written in 1914 in honour of the casualties of the British Expeditionary Force, which by then already suffered severely at the Battle of Mons and the Battle of the Marne. The third and fourth stanzas (especially the fourth stanza) are frequently used as a tribute to casualties of war throughout the world, and are known as the "Ode of Remembrance".
