Story authors
editThe two translations are clearly marked as such, including specifying the author and whether it's only a partial translation or not.
- The Spectre Barber: Johann Karl August Musäus, "Stumme Liebe"
- The Well of Recovery: Friedrich Adolf Krummacher, "Der Born der Genesung" IA
Mrs John Francis Smith
editThe Catalogue of the Edinburgh Subscription Library 1794–1846 lists:
- Smith (Mrs John Francis), The Decameron of the West: A Series of Tales. Edin. 1839. 8vo.
And again in the index, showing it was not likely a printer's error:
- Decameron of the West, - - - v. Smith (Mrs John).
The catalogue was published in Edinburgh only seven years after this book, which could make this attribution more likely. --YodinT 19:41, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Also worth noting the number of Smiths in the title page list of publishers:
- Smith & Son; M. Ogle; and D. Bryce, Glasgow
- Brown & Co.; and L. Smith, Aberdeen
- Smith, Elder, & Co., London
- A "Mr Smith" also appears as a character in the chapter "An Execution in the House" (pp. 320–323). --YodinT 19:51, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Ancestry shows one John Francis Smith married Helen Scott, daughter of William Scott, on 20 October 1835 at Saint Cuthberts Church, Edinburgh. --YodinT 09:44, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- Possibly the same Helen Scott (c.1799 – 29 March 1883) mentioned here. She was married to John Francis Smith (c.1807 – 31 March 1840), whose "profession was literary", and was a contributor to Encyclopedia Britannica. --YodinT 22:59, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
