Cairns, Earl (Hugh MacCalmont Cairns), D.C.L. Oxon 1863, LL.D. Camb. 1862 and Trin. Coll., Dublin, 1867, B.A., P.C., created Earl Cairns and Viscount Garmoyle 27 Sept., 1878, Baron Cairns 27 Feb., 1867, M.P. Belfast 1852–66, solicitor-general 1858–9, attorney-general July to Oct., 1866, lord justice of appeal 1866–8, lord high chancellor in 1868 and 1874–80, chancellor of Dublin Univ. since 1867, a student of Lincoln's Inn 14 Jan., 1841 (then aged 21), went to the Middle Temple 5 and called to the bar- there 26 Jan., 1844, Q.C. 1856, bencher of Lincoln's Inn 15 April, 1856 (2nd son of William Cairns, Esq., of Cultra, co. Down); born 27 Dec., 1819; married 9 May, 1856, Mary Harriet, eldest dau. of late J. McNeile, of Parkmount, co. Antrim, and has issue (see Foster's Peerage).
