This is an account of the author’s experience with the New York Seventh Regiment during the regiment’s deployment from New York to Washington, D.C. in 1861 at the start of the American Civil War. This work was published as part of the anthology Life in the Open Air and other papers. This work was published posthumously in 1863. The next part of Life in the Open Air and other papers, titled “Washington as a Camp”, follows the regiment during its thirty-day service in Washington.

The story has no chapters, but has been divided by major headings for presentation in this medium.
